Botanical Information: Botanical Information: FRITILLARIA affinis The Fritillaria affinis is also known as the Checker Lily. The plant has bulbets that look like grains of rice and Indian people called it "rice root". The plant is a tall herbaceous perennial, growing three to four feet high. The bulbs were eaten by most coast and interior Salish peoples, steamed in pits or boiling for a short time then mashing to a paste. The bulbs were used as an item of trade. The Fritillaria species have become quite uncommon and are rare to find in the wild.
